Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain and located in the Mediterranean. The native language, as on the rest of the Balearic Islands, is Catalan, which is co-official with Spanish. The capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands have been an autonomous region of Spain since 1983. There are two small islands off the coast of Mallorca: Cabrera (southeast of Palma) and Dragonera (west of Palma). The anthem of Mallorca is "La Balanguera". Like the other Balearic Islands of Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, the island is an extremely popular holiday destination, particularly for tourists from Germany and the United Kingdom. The international airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport, is one of the busiest in Spain. The name derives from Classical Latin insula maior, "larger island". Later, in Medieval Latin, this became Maiorica, "the larger one", in comparison to Menorca, "the smaller one"
The main temple of Mallorca and all the Balearic Islands, the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca, bearing the name of St. Mary, is a magnificent example of pompous Gothic architecture in all its splendor. The history of the cathedral begins in 1230, when on the site of an old mosque, by decree of King Jaime I, it was decided to build a Christian cathedral, which was also to become a resting place for the kings of Mallorca.
Like some other Spanish cathedrals, the construction of the temple dragged on for centuries. In recent history, the building has been rebuilt several times under the leadership of architect Jaime Fabre, who worked on the creation of the Cathedral in Barcelona. And the interior of the cathedral was designed by the brilliant architect Antonio Gaudi. Perhaps this is one of the brightest cathedrals in the Mediterranean due to the numerous windows decorated with unusual stained-glass windows of the 14-15th centuries.
